I want a true "skin mount" done eventually, not a fiberglass reproduction. Who does great work, at affordable prices, in the Plattsburgh area if possible?
Also, best way of preserving fish in the meantime, after taking good color photos after landing it? I expect to kill the fish with probe into brain, rather that whacking it with a bat, if it's going to be mounted.
Don't laugh, but my goal is a record-size longnose-gar, hardly a targeted species, yet it's the freshwater visual equivalent of a barracuda, and would look nice in my man-cave on the wall. Record size is 49.5", BTW.
I believe the VT side still has a short firearm season for carp and gar, so I'm not ruling that out either, as it allows me to take only the largest, whereas a hook is non selective, and with gar, generally requires cutting the line, or, wearing stainless-mesh butcher gloves, unless willing to lose a finger, if fish is to be released.

Doug Yasner in Burlington does fine skin mounts... He does many of our fish and is working on a few now as I type for us.
Can't wait to set the results that are sure to come in the coming weeks. I am getting a replica salmon done by him for the 1st time, but I have had lakers and Browns done by him that are skin mounts that are beautiful. He also stands by his work if it ever needs touchup.

Other taxidermist I have contacted around LC all seem to be WAY over priced for work done, esp the ones I talked to in NY.
Good luck.

I second Doug Yasner as a suggestion. Top notch work and you will not be disappointed. I have a number of his pieces in my house, as well as many others that I know about. Nobody that I know has been let down by him. From salmon, walleye, steelys, browns, lakers, and anything out of the ordinary he does it all.
